Faux Leather Jacket

The faux leather jackets is basically a fake leather jacket. Instead of being made by animal skin products they are made out of materials that have been put through various processes and treatments to give the look, feel and texture of real leather. Faux leather comes under various other names such as leatherette, pleather, Naugahyde to name a few. There are several reasons why the  faux leather jacket is made.

One of the main reasons is faux leather is cheaper to create than real leather so the obvious benefit being jackets and other products will be cheaper. Another reason is there are people who choose the faux leather jacket and other faux products out of ethical reasons, there are even products made out of “ vegan” leather with the vegans in mind. Also the faux leather jacket is lighter and easier to clean and maintain than real leather.

There are several ways in which faux leather is made. One way of making faux leather is out of a product called polyvinyl chloride; other ways include fabric material such as cotton, or polyester, coated with substances to make your faux leather jacket look and feel real. This material was first produced by the company, DuPont and they called it Corfam, and are also called poromeric imitation leather. This product was ultimately not very successful, but it pioneered the manufacture of faux leather products, such as the faux leather jacket, to be made porous or “breathable” which continues to this day. Early faux leather jackets made out of Naugahyde or pleather could mimic the look of leather but not the feel. Pleather looks shiny, like real leather, and its stiffer than leather. Early pleather is made out of PVC but nowadays they are made out of polyurethane which gives pleather more “breathable” which make today’s faux leather jackets more comfortable. For those of you who are looking for a faux leather jacket or any other faux leather product for that matter that is both environmentally sensitive and animal free, there are bio degradable forms of polyurethane based faux leather products. There are a few other eco-friendly faux leather jackets out there but are not easy to find and not to mention more expensive than even real leather. Making faux leather jackets are of course not the only way faux leather is used, there are hand bags, shoes, upholstery and various other products made from faux leather.

The faux leather jacket can come under different labels when it reaches the store, you will see the labels on them describing it as, man made leather, synthetic leather, leather like and even designer leather is used to describe faux leather jackets. Sometimes the faux leather jacket will be stamped with a machine so as to give it a leather grain look to it which will make it look like real leather. another difference of faux leather jackets is the smell, faux leather usually does not have the odor of leather if it has a smell it is usually a slight “rubbery” smell.
